How many birthdays does Congresswoman Ilhan Omar have?
Investigations into Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) have often come up short when looking into Omar’s journey from child refugee to American politician. Perhaps one of the reasons why is because the date of birth found on documents, i.e. her marriage certificate (allegedly to her brother), show her date of birth as October 4, 1982.
However, Google searches for Omar’s birthday list her birth year as 1981.
A check of Omar’s official House of Representatives website’s “About” section directs users to contact her office for “Representative Omar’s official photo or biography.”
What if it is not just the year that is incorrect? What if the entire date is wrong? What if her actual birthday is April 7, 1980-something?
The question arose when a screenshot of a Facebook post written by Omar’s sister, Sahra Noor, was recently sent to the Deplorable Housewives of Minnesota. The post, dated April 7, 2015, states, “Wishing my beautiful sister Ilhan Omar happiest of birthdays! I am in awe of the woman you’ve become and so very proud to be your sister. May God continue to bless you and your family. Can’t wait for our birthday dinner tonight.”
There may be an explanation for the difference in dates: Maybe Ms. Noor forgot her sister’s birthday back in October and was attempting to make up for her forgetfulness? Or maybe she was going to be out of town in October of 2015, so they decided to celebrate and pretend that April 7, 2015 was Omar’s birthday? Or maybe they use a totally different calendar where April is actually October and “4” and “7” are interchangeable?
Notably, in the time since this screenshot was captured, Ms. Noor shut down part of her Facebook feed to hide posts between 2014 and 2017.
Refugees from less developed countries often don’t know their actual date of birth. Court records show that some folks new to the US will use the January 1 as their birth date. Maybe Omar just chose October 4 instead of Jan 1? But why would her sister be wishing her a happy birthday on April 7?
Whatever the reason, it adds to the already long list of unanswered questions swirling around Rep. Ilhan Omar.
